How Does Dent Removal Work?

At Alpha Auto Body, we use precise techniques to ensure your dents are repaired, oftentimes without damaging your paint. The most common techniques involve the use of a metal rod and body picks that help to push the dents out from the underside. We can fine tune the repair by tapping it down to remove any high or uneven spots. We can also blend these spots to match the texture of your vehicle’s paint using something called orange peel.

Why Have Dents Repaired

Dents not only cause unsightly blemishes in your vehicle’s paint, but they can also decrease its resale value and they put you at risk for safety issues, depending on the location and severity of the dent. Below, you’ll find more information about why it’s important to have dents repaired as soon as possible.

  • Rust problems — Dents create deep blemishes in your car that can damage your paint and create cracks in the exterior. If water makes its way into those cracks, the metal may begin to oxidize, creating rust.

  • Long-term paint damage — If there are scratches on or around the area that is dented, you may need paint repair in addition to dent removal. The longer you wait, the more issues this will cause for your paint in the long run.

  • Reduced resale value — Even if your car runs perfectly fine, the exterior appearance affects how much you can make when you resell your vehicle. If the exterior is riddled with dents, potential buyers are likely to pay less than if your car was dent-free.

  • Safety — Safety should be the number one priority when it comes to your vehicle. Dents and blemishes can mask structural damage that may not be entirely obvious. Be sure to have your dents looked at if they’re caused in a collision, even if it’s minor.

  • Cheaper to fix — The more promptly you have your dents removed, the less they’ll cost. If you wait and allow rust to build or scratches to get worse, repairs will be more extensive and expensive.

Types of Dent Removal

Paintless Dent Removal

If we’re dealing with a dent that has no scratches surrounding it, we’ll likely be able to use paintless dent removal (PDR). Depending on the extent of the damage, our experienced technicians may have to remove damaged panels from your car prior to repairs. Then, using specialized tools and heat, they will work to restore the shape of your car’s exterior. Since there is no paint damage, we won’t need to sand or paint the area.

Because there is paint damage involved in this type of repair, the process typically takes longer than in PDR. It begins similarly to PDR, with our technicians removing the panels if necessary, and using specialized tools to restore the shape. Then, they will repair the paint damage by sanding and smoothing the area before applying a primer and a new coat of paint.

We service all foreign and domestic cars and specialize in Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Lexus, Saab, Infinity, Toyota, Subaru, and Honda. When you choose Alpha Auto Body Inc., you can trust that you’re making the best decision for your auto repair needs. Plus, along with high quality repairs, we also help you with the rental car process. Contact us in Hudson to schedule an appointment.
